Architect, Lisbon, 2001
A practice focused on architectural design as a response to context, use, and spatial experience.
The intervention site is located in Alto da Ajuda, Lisbon, and the proposed program consists of a studio-house. Opposite the plot, to the north, is the garden of the Ajuda National Palace, and to the south, a view of the Tejo river. The corner finish and the project's relationship with the existing wall were two of the most influential factors in its formalization. Through a curve, the project seeks to finish off the corner and, from there, create a tension between this volume and the existing wall. The tower emerges as an element that stands out in relation to its surroundings, thus punctuating the end of the street.
The project consists of three floors. The studio and garden are located on the lower floor. It is on this floor that a more direct relationship is established between these two spaces, through a glass facade. On the north side, facing the palace, taller openings give the idea of transparency and lightness of the volume in relation to the street.
The intermediate floor, which is more social, frames several views, with the north façade having only one opening overlooking the palace garden. In contrast, the opposite façade has a greater relationship with the house's garden and faces east. In the kitchen area, which is elevated in relation to the others, there is an opening overlooking the river.
The top floor, more private, has a small room that contrasts with the size of the terrace. On this terrace, a sloping path culminates in a space with a predominant view of the landscape.
